Season 14 feels less confusing once you see Diablo 4 runes as part of the wider power chase, not just another thing sitting in your inventory. Across the Threshold is where the seasonal loop starts to click. You are not being sent to a normal dungeon entrance. You need to find a Realmwalker, beat it, take the portal it leaves behind, and clear the Deathtoll Chamber. A lot of players lose time following a vague map marker, then assume the quest is bugged. Usually, they are just waiting in the wrong place.
Get Through the Quest Without Burning an Evening.
While levelling, keep things simple. Use the gear that drops, favour a weapon upgrade over clever-looking stats, and play a setup that can clear packs without stopping every few seconds. Helltides are useful because they give you density, loot, and Rupture progress in one go. If a Surging Rupture pops up nearby, do it. But don't spend half an hour riding around hoping one turns into a Realmwalker. When Across the Threshold needs moving along, head for the Colossal Rupture in the Fields of Desecration near Zarbinzet. That is the dependable option. Once the Realmwalker goes down, get through its portal straight away and deal with the chamber mechanics before trying to race the boss.
- Stay near ritual objectives during the Realmwalker event.
- Intercept Gravehound orbs before they feed the Exarch.
- Run the highest Torment tier you can clear without constant deaths.
- Save several Superior Lair Keys before farming the Corrupted Reaper.
The chamber is not just a quick detour. It is your key factory. At stronger Torment levels, Deathtoll Chambers can reliably hand out Superior Lair Keys, and those keys lead into Corrupted Reaper runs. That boss is where Pandemonium Fragments start to matter. Patch 3.1.1 lowered the Mythic upgrade cost to four Fragments, while Reaper rewards and repeatable reputation payouts made the grind less punishing. Still, four Fragments are not a reason to throw the first decent Unique you find into the Cube. The item gets consumed, and the Mythic result is random within that equipment slot. That can sting when your build is still changing every other session.
A better rhythm is to level in dense content, pick up Ruptures as they fit your route, use the Colossal Rupture when you need a guaranteed Realmwalker, then bank keys for a proper Reaper session. Once your build has settled, choose the slot that is genuinely holding you back and craft around that. If you decide to buy diablo 4 runes, treat them as support for a clear build plan rather than a shortcut around the seasonal loop. Fast, repeatable clears will usually beat risky Torment pushes, and they make the whole route feel far less like a chore.
